Chocolate Covered Oreo Tutorial.

Chocolate Covered Oreos Wedding Favor Spinning Leaf

When it came to planning my wedding, I was extremely focused. I treated the process like another job. I made lists, created spreadsheets, and did a tremendous amount of research. I knew the general vibe I was looking to capture on my big day, and I was committed to achieving it.

More than anything, I wanted to keep the ceremony and reception simple and fun. I'd like to think I achieved that. I do know that everything turned out to be exactly the way I had imagined. That's thanks to the hard work and help of my husband, our families, our wedding party, and our fabulous venue and its staff. It really was a great day.

There are a number of wedding traditions my husband and I decided just weren't right for us. Among these were things like the garter and bouquet toss, a display cake, and flowers. We wanted something simple, not overly showy, and budget-friendly. The best wedding planning advice I can give is to do exactly what is right for you and your soon-to-be spouse. Be polite, hear people out, but, at the end of the day, it's your wedding, and you need to be happy with it. Do you!

When it came to our wedding favors, we were just as committed to giving out something our guests would enjoy that would also be simple and efficient. We decided to make chocolate covered Oreos in a mold that had bride and groom shapes. Each guest got one treat bag with one of each Oreo. We made the bride Oreos white and the groom Oreos dark brown, to imitate our dress and tux. We tied our escort cards to the treat bags, so the favor did double duty. We had them all arranged by table number at the front of the reception venue.

I think that the idea of an edible favor is a really good one. Many of the weddings I've attended in recent years have had this sort of thing. Everybody loves a treat! And I know that a cookie or some candy won't accumulate dust on a shelf (I hope not, anyway. If it does, it probably should be thrown away).

These chocolate covered Oreos also make wonderful bridal shower favors. The company I buy molds from, Spinning Leaf, also has molds with many, many other designs--birthdays, graduations, holidays, religious milestones--you name it, they have it. I really recommend their products!

To make chocolate covered Oreos, you will need:

DoubleStuf Oreos (does it bother you also that there aren't two "f"s in "Stuf"?)

Candy melts, such as those by Wilton

Oreo dipping mold, like the ones from Spinning Leaf

Fill a small bowl with candy melts. Follow the instructions on the package to melt them in your microwave. With Wilton melts, you need to first microwave the candy for one minute, and then stir and melt in 30-second increments as needed. If you overheat the candy melts, they will harden and burn. Always stir thoroughly between heatings. You would be surprised how effective stirring can be at helping to soften the chocolate. It needs less heat time than you might assume.

Fill a cavity in your Oreo mold about halfway with the melted chocolate. Press an Oreo firmly into the chocolate. Spoon additional chocolate into the cavity. Gently bang the mold against the counter or table to settle the chocolate. Do this until the chocolate appears smooth.

Once you have filled all of the cavities in your mold, let the chocolate set for about twenty minutes. As soon as it has cooled, place the mold in your refrigerator for about thirty minutes. Then, remove the mold and press gently on the top of each cavity (where the design is) to pop out the Oreos. Voila! Delicious, tasty treats to enjoy or share!

If you've decided you're done making Oreos with your Spinning Leaf molds, they are also great for soap making! I've done that before, too. The snowflake soap below made great Christmas gifts this year!

Have you ever eaten a chocolate covered Oreo? They're soooo good. If for no other reason than to try one, give the above tutorial a go at home. Let me know what you think!
